*I’ve not come across a portrait of Catherine de Medici by Sofonisba, but the two women spent considerable time together in Bayonne, France in the summer of 1565 when Sofonisba accompanied Isabel de Valois for the diplomatic conference. It is quite possible that Sofonisba worked on the queen mother’s portrait. Catherine de Medici was a huge patron of art and would have relished the chance for a portrait by her countrywoman, especially someone who was an intimate of her daughter. ISBN 978-0-86698-821-6.
